Frequently Asked Questions

Does virtual counselling actually work or is it just weird?

It is completely normal to wonder if talking to a screen will feel cold or disconnected. But for recovery, virtual sessions have a unique, grounding benefit: you get to do the hard work from inside your own safe space. You can sit on your own couch, hold your favourite mug, or have your pet next to you. There is no stressful commute or waiting room anxiety. Once we get past the first five minutes, the screen tends to fade away, leaving just an honest, real conversation in a space where you already feel secure.

Do I have to quit everything before I start counselling?

No. You do not need to have your life completely figured out or be perfectly sober to walk through the door (or onto the computer screen!). Come exactly as you are. We’ll start right where you are standing today, without judgement. The first step is simply getting to know you and understanding your relationship with substances, not demanding big changes or perfection.

What is different about addiction counselling than therapy?

Addiction counselling is a specialized area of counselling that focuses specifically on substance and behavioural addictions, the impact addiction can have on a person’s overall well-being, and recovery. Together, we explore the patterns, triggers, and underlying experiences connected to addiction while building practical skills for change, coping and long term-recovery. While addiction counselling and therapy can overlap, therapy may focus more broadly on mental health concerns or specific areas such as trauma, relationships or other psychological needs. I believe in collaborative care and will refer to or work alongside other professionals to ensure you get the best care for your path.

Is this just going to be someone telling me what to do, or counting my days?

Not at all. We do not do rigid lectures or forced formulas. You are the expert on your own life. Our role is to help you slow down, look at the root causes of your pain, and figure out what you want your recovery to look like. We focus on real-world steps and inner peace, not a checklist of rules.

What actually happens during the very first appointment?

The first session is just a low-pressure conversation to see if we are a good fit. There is no interrogation. We will chat about what has been going on, what you hope to get out of therapy, and how we can best support you. You only share what you feel ready to share, at your own pace.

How do I get started?

It is very simple, and there is no pressure. Just drop a quick message through the contact form. We will reach out to schedule a low-key, initial chat to see if we feel like a good fit for one another. You do not need to have a big speech prepared or your goals figured out—just take that first small step and we will guide you through the rest.
